Projects Atomic Lamp

This project is for Tuyen's first client and

assignment 2 during his time at Auckland University

In May 2020, during my university, I received my first order on designing a bedroom lamp for Phan Trong Phu, a university student at Auckland University of Technology.

My customer is a minimalistic and selective person, so this was a challenge to my artistic and vivid mind. However, an extraordinary designer should overcome all the differences.
In this design, the lamp conveys the inspirations from science by its atomic shape, which brings out the simplicity yet modernistic. Furthermore, an adjustable switch to adjust the light brightness was added to make it suitable for all conditions and activities inside the bedroom like reading, studying, or night talk; since the client wants a small table lamp next to his bed, to support him at night time, as well as winter season while the sky is gloomy.

At the first moment, intentions on making a lamp were different from the outcome. Many sketches and prototypes got denied due to my lack of information and knowledge (e.g., the first idea was making a blooming flower to adjust the brightness instead of using an adjustable switch). On the other hand, I built up a tight connection with my customer preferences and needs (and friendship) after a few more interviews. With this design, he can use it where ever he wants. It could be in the bedroom, kitchen, living room, or even next to a TV with its small and adjustable brightness design.

Despite being acceptable to my customer, I can see there are much more potentials in my design. For example, adds motion to the lamp, sensor systems, adjustable height, or even moderations to the shape to become solar systems, milky ways, an eclipse rings instead. However, time is limited, so I am happy with this design and soon bring it to life for my customer.
